A TWIST of fate saw Hiroaki Nakamura catch his 1000th barramundi at East Point on Saturday afternoon.
The Sunday Territorian fishing columnist had planned on heading to Channel Island to achieve the milestone but his trusty 150cc scooter – complete with rod holders and fish carriers – failed him at Berrimah Saturday morning.
“I drove my old, small (50cc) scooter to East Point and there I caught my 1000th barramundi,” he said.
Hiro landed the fish at 1.30pm near the creek mouth at East Point on an incoming tide after casting lures for about 40 minutes.
The land-based angler said as soon as the fish hit the Reidy’s kryptonite-coloured B52 lure he knew it was a barra.
“It was a small barramundi – I didn’t expect a good sized one because there was much freshwater in the sea,” he said.
All 1000 barra have been caught from land.
Hiro said he was “very happy” about reaching the milestone but he had no plans to stop there. “I received many messages from many Facebook friends,” he said. “Darwin people are generous and kind hearted and I want to say thankyou very much.”
Hiro caught his first barramundi at the Fannie Bay rocks near the Trailer Boat Club on March 30, 2010.
