Darwin Airport was evacuated following a security breach.

Darwin airport evacuated

ABOUT 700 people have been evacuated from Darwin International Airport following a security breach.

Passengers were forced off flights and out of the departure area before being ushered to the ground floor terminal area of the airport.

Australian Federal Police vehicles are lined up outside the airport.

A Darwin Airport spokeswoman said a passenger had travelled through security at the airport and had been advised her bag needed to be re-screened.

“They have picked up the bag and rather than wait for it to be re-screened took it to the first floor, meaning everybody had to be re-screened,” she said.

“The process of re-screening is underway now.

“Darwin Airport apologises for the inconvenience but we take safety very seriously and any compromise of safety very seriously.”

Vicki and Peter from Victoria told the NT News they arrived at the airport well ahead of their flight hoping to enjoy a few drinks but forced to have their bags re-screened.

The couple said they travelled to Darwin The Ghan and visited Kakadu.

“We had a great holiday and this is part of it,” they said.

It’s the second security breach in two days.

The NT News understands that on Monday, a Virgin flight from Darwin to Melbourne was forced to turn back after a male passenger comprised the safety of passengers and crew on the flight.

Virgin was contacted for comment.
