A man is in custody after allegedly throwing hot water on multiple officers during a 10-hour siege in Gray.

Police say they attended a residence on Cornwallis Circuit in Gray as about 3.50pm on Tuesday as part of their investigation into a recent aggravated assault report.

The 55-year-old occupant answered the door, but allegedly became aggressive and when asked, denied the alleged victim was present.

NT Police allege the man threatened to throw hot water at the attending officers and denied them access to the home.

The man then allegedly allowed the victim to exit the home a short time later, but locked himself inside.

Police further allege officers told the man he was under arrest and ordered him outside.

However he is alleged to have refused, and twice threw hot water through the screen door, which hit two officers.

Police alleged he barricaded himself inside and threatened to self-harm before throwing hot water on a third officer.

The officers did not require medical treatment.

Police called additional resources and a cordon of the area was set up so negotiators could talk to the man, who allegedly had an edged weapon while standing at the door.

The screen door and front window were removed by officers to provide a clearer view of the alleged offender, while negotiations continued until about 1.55am Wednesday.

Police eventually chose to use OC canisters about 6.05am to allow a safe entrance into the home to arrest the man without further incident.

The man remains in custody, with a police spokesperson stating charges were expected to follow.

Police urge anyone experiencing difficulties due to domestic violence to contact 1800RESPECT (1800737732) or Lifeline 131 114.
