MORE than $60,000 has been raised for a Darwin man who was “brutally attacked” in Greece, with injuries leaving him in hospital for more than two months.
Charlie Kathopoulis, who was in Rhodes completing army requirements and helping settle his late father’s estate, was left with horrific injuries following the May 30 attack.
His sister Michelle Kathopoulis set up the GoFundMe with a goal of $200,000, to help raise funds to bring her brother home.
The page had raised $61,425 as at 1pm Tuesday, August 9, including a generous $10,000 from the Obst family.
“Two intruders broke into the residence in which Charlie was staying in Rhodes,” Ms Kathopoulis said.
“Charlie was badly beaten to the head with a steel bar and stabbed multiple times in the throat and chest.
“Two men have been arrested, refused bail, and will be charged with attempted murder.”
Ms Kathopoulis said her brother was left with major head trauma, skull fractures, an explosive fracture to the jaw, a critically damaged windpipe, a broken collarbone and punctured lungs.
She said her brother was initially non-responsive, with his head injures leaving him in a medically induced coma for 35 days.
“It is yet to be determined the extent of the damage to his windpipe, vocal cords and brain,” she said.
Her brother has been in the intensive care unit ward of Rhodes General Hospital for the past couple of months.
The Darwin woman said she, her mother and sisters flew to Rhodes to be with Charlie, and had been there since June 2.
“We are immensely grateful for the care and support that has been provided to us by Rhodes General Hospital,” Ms Kathopoulis said.
“In both the surgery performed on Charlie on the night of his arrival as they saved his life, and the subsequent care and procedures that have followed.
“We now however find ourselves in a state of deep distress and limbo as a result of a complex and seemingly impenetrable medical system.
“The hospital has approached four different hospitals to admit Charlie to receive the lifesaving operations he needs to begin recovery. He has been denied admission each time.”
