NORTH Geelong Warriors and Stuart Begg this week parted ways after the embattled head coach handed in his resignation following five consecutive losses in the opening six rounds of the NPL Victoria competition.

It is believed Begg tendered his resignation to club officials immediately following last Saturday’s demoralising 1-4 loss to the fellow newly promoted Moreland City in Melbourne.

The Elcho Park based club, which is currently languishing second last on the standings and finds itself in the dreaded relegation zone, late Tuesday night confirmed the departure of last season’s NPL2 Coach of the Year.

“North Geelong Warriors is saddened to announce the resignation of its men‘s team head coach, Stuart Begg,” North Geelong said in an official statement.

“We will always hold Stu (Stuart) in high regard and we can’t stress enough the respect and admiration we have for the work he has done and the person that he is,” Warriors’ president Tom Trupkovic said.

“We wish him all the best in whatever decision he makes going forward. We do sincerely hope we can continue working with him in some capacity.”

Begg’s departure from the helm of the Warriors is the second coaching casualty of the current season, hot on the heels of Corio SC’s sacking of Bobby Stojcevski following the Eagles’ first round loss in State League 1.

“I have resigned and North Geelong have reluctantly accepted,” Begg said.

“I am taking a break and I will re-evaluate where my future ambitions lie and I may return to the club in some aspect.

“North Geelong has an amazing culture and community, and I have forged some great friendships and coached some amazing players during the last four years.

“The club is in good hands, and I wish them the best for the 2023 season. However, for now, I look forward to seeing what the future holds for me.”

Begg played for the club in the National Youth League in 1995 and was a member of the Warriors’ senior team in the 1996 Victorian Premier League season.

Meanwhile, the Warriors confirmed in their statement that Begg’s assistant Tom Gavran would assume the role of caretaker coach “whilst the club goes through a process and considers the options to direct the season ahead of them.”

Gavran’s first assignment will be a home tie against the 5th placed Green Gully at Elcho Park on Saturday.
