Dobbie’s Butchery in Nightcliff has claimed silver in the 2024 National Sausage King Competition.

The family-owned business secured the prize, just one point short of the gold in the Traditional Australian Pork Sausage category of the Australian Meat Industry Council Retail competition with their English pork sausage.

They achieved another second-place finish in the National Best Butchers Lamb Burger contest.

For 40-year industry veteran Richard Dobbie, the achievement was both surprising and thrilling, knowing they came within a whisker of claiming the top prize.

“I’m pretty stoked about it,” he said.

“To be just one point off winning in our category is a huge achievement, especially considering it’s the first time the Northern Territory has been included in the competition.”

Held in Launceston, the event saw butchers from across the country battle it out for top honours in the Sausage King, Best Butchers Burger, and Apprentice of the Year categories.

Mr Dobbie credits their success to a commitment to quality and strong relationships with suppliers.

“We use fresh ingredients every time. We’re pretty passionate about what we do, and I think that’s what gets us across the line,” he said.

“Working in Darwin, we get quality products from down south, and we have to work very closely with our suppliers to keep everything as fresh as possible.”

Beyond their award-winning products, Dobbie’s Butchery is a cornerstone of the local community.

They sponsor clubs such as the University Pirates Rugby Union Football Club and local cricket teams, run meat raffles, and donate to CareFlight and other charities.

“We try to give as much as we can to our local area,” Mr Dobbie said.

“The community supports us, so we try to support them where we can.”

The Dobbies are already looking ahead to next year’s competition.

“We’re going to follow it through every year and do the best we can – bring in new products and keep it as fresh as possible,” Mr Dobbie said.
