Why ‘Micro’concerts are coming to your backyard

The loungeroom is the new concert hall thanks to one new Gold Coast artist out to shake the industry up with an exciting new movement.

GOLD Coasters are turning patios and loungerooms into toe-tapping concert halls, thanks to high-profile local swing and jazz crooner Jake Meywes.

Unable to perform at his usual venues because of coronavirus restrictions, the Voice contestant has brought the show to his audience by offering intimate “micro-concerts” in homes.

Clients hosting parties of up to 100 people are selling their own tickets to split the cost of hiring the band.

“It is actually a fantastic way to perform,” Meywes said. “We want it to continue after things return to normal.

“It is a concert without having to go to a typical style venue. The most recent home could accommodate 30 people so it was a lot of fun.

“Instead of playing music in the background like you would see at parties, we are upfront. It is an intimate way to build a fan base.”

Meywes charges a flat rate for the in-home concerts, offering anything from a duo to a seven-piece band.

Meywes came up with the idea after he was booked to perform on a dock to a group of neighbours during the height of the COVID lockdown in Queensland.

“I thought we needed to adapt to what life looks like at the moment and this is such a fun way of doing it and it makes gigs affordable.”
