***Voting for Tasmania’s Best Hairdresser and Salon has been extended by popular demand – cast your vote by 5PM this evening.***

FROM home salons to inner-city businesses, those who have cut hair for decades and others just starting out but already beloved — Tassie men and women love their hairdressers.

When the Mercury put out the call to find Tassie’s Best Hairdresser in our first Best Of Tassie series for 2021, we were inundated with nominations.

Mia Holly nominated Leah Newbon at Franklin Cuts (Huon Valley).

“Always putting the needs and wants of her clients first. Is never in a rush to have you in and out; Leah won’t let you leave the salon unless you’re 200% satisfied and your smile hurts your face. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. A huge compliment to a well know, highly reputable local salon. The valley is lucky to have someone so talented all to ourselves. The world is this girls oyster.”

Faith Barron nominated Shayla Ackerley from Nix Hair and Beauty Salon.

“Shayla is truly one of the most hardworking and dedicated hairdressers who’s come such a long way and continued to flourish. She has such a strong work ethic which shines through each and every clients hair. Couldn’t recommend more of a genuine and talented person.”

Casey Herring nominated HAIR By Martika Styles.

“Martika does an amazing job, you never walk away unhappy. Her little salon is so inviting and the girls there are so friendly, it feels like a little family. Plus her salon puppy Winnie is always about for hugs and kisses.”

Another of those nominated was Genre Hair, with hair stylist Amanda Lee-Hyland saying the “amazing” Collins St salon feels to her like a sanctuary in the city.

“It reminds me of a day spa you’d go to for treatments, but instead it’s a hair spa,” she said.

Amanda has been at Genre Hair for more than two years and said it’s the best salon she’s ever worked for “by far”.

“We stock ethical products aligning with our values, they’re mainly Australian brands too,” she said.

COVID-19 has made regular training with mainland-based companies tricky, but the team of seven have persevered and stayed up to date on the latest trends.

“I’ve seen a lot of big changes in people wanting a massive change in their hair and I don’t know if that’s because people have been isolating or away for a while and need a change,” Ms Lee-Hyland said.

“Other people are letting their natural hair grow out because lockdown allowed them to do that, we’re seeing lots of natural looks with soft roots and regrowths.”

*Due to the overwhelming number of nominations we’ve split the vote for Best Hairdresser into Best Hairdresser and Best Salon. Only those with multiple nominations were included. VOTE BELOW >>

Voting closes at 3pm Monday, January 18.
