WITNESSES were forced to intervene and help a woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted in broad daylight in popular suburb Nakara.

A local resident, who did not want to be named, said he was driving home about 4.30pm on Tuesday when he saw a commotion involving an Aboriginal woman and two Aboriginal men near his home along Macredie St.

He initially thought one of the men and women were having sex, but realised the woman was allegedly being raped by one man while the other watched, after the witness heard her screaming for help.

“When I came out I could actually hear her screaming,” he said. “She was saying ‘no, no’ and actually calling out for help.”

He rang police, who said they’d received another call about the incident, and advised him not to intervene for his safety. The resident said the offender was allegedly trying to force the victim to have oral sex with him.

“He was trying to turn her over. She was on the ground and pulling her by the hair,” he said.

“She was pleading for someone to help. By this time four or five cars, probably more, drove by and no one stopped. A guy walked past and it was as though it was a regular occurrence.”

The resident said he went to intervene when a woman in a silver car pulled up beside the scene. He said she rang the police and the offender began throwing his thongs at the car. He said at this point the victim was able to escape.

“She had a shirt on but no clothing underneath,” he said.

“I went and grabbed some clothes and water while still waiting for police.”

The victim told the witness the men were not known to her.

The witness said police arrived 30 minutes after and the offenders were long gone. Police confirmed they were investigating the incident.

“Police received a report of a 31-year-old female that was allegedly assaulted in Nakara (Tuesday) afternoon. The matter remains under investigation,” Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Grieve said.
