The Western Victoria Primary Health Network is seeking to hear from people throughout the Geelong region on their experiences with mental health services as it works to develop a new facility in the northern suburbs.

Community consultation is underway for a new mental health centre set to open in the northern suburbs later this year.

The Western Victoria Primary Health Network (WVPHN) is seeking to hear from people throughout the Geelong region on their experiences with mental health services as it works to develop the new facility.

The WVPHN is currently compiling stories received from people with lived experience, carers and health and support professionals as part of the initial work to develop the adult mental health centre (AMHC), set to be opened in Corio.

The Geelong AMHC is one of eight centres to be trialled in Australia as part of a $114.5

million funding commitment from the federal government.

It will also be the first centre of its type established in Victoria and will offer an entry point for adults to access mental health information, services and supports.

The centre was promised in the lead-up to the 2019 federal election.

Several stakeholders, including Barwon Health, headspace and G21, voiced support for the centre slated for the northern suburbs.

WVPHN CEO Rowena Clift said the work of the primary health network was to develop the

new centre in liaison with the community and health providers.

“This is an important opportunity for the people of Geelong to help create a mental health

support centre for adults that focuses specifically on local needs,” Ms Clift said.

Ms Clift said the AMHC will not duplicate or replace existing services.

“Instead, it will work alongside other services to ensure people aged 18 to 65 years have access to the right mental health support,” she said.

“People can choose to submit their experience, fill out a survey, participate in a discussion forum or register to be interviewed by phone.”

The WVPHN will continue inviting community involvement during the planning and development stages of the new centre including feedback on proposed recommendations for how the services at the centre will be designed and delivered.

“I strongly encourage anyone wanting to participate in the development of this vital new

service to get in contact with Western Victoria PHN and register your interest,” Ms Clift said.

The AMHC will also be guided by outcomes from the Regional Mental Health and Suicide

Prevention Plan and the Geelong Suicide Prevention initiative to offer a comprehensive

approach to community health and wellbeing at all stages of a person’s life.
