Police patrolling Princes Park made the discovery about 3.50am.
Fire crews used water and brooms to remove the offensive material, reportedly 25 metres in size, which appeared to be deliberately painted next to the floral memorial at the park.
Park workers covered the remainder of the site with a white material to hide what was unable to be cleaned away.
Local resident Sue Murray, who has frequented Princes Park for years, said: “It’s just disgraceful. We live in a world of sick people.”
“There’s only one place to put these people. If they catch them, lock them up.”
She was shocked by the news last week but said she had never felt safe in the area along the cemetery.
“I’ve always said, if anything happened no one would hear you.”
Another local John Ciccone, 50, was disgusted by the heartless act.
“I can’t believe someone can come here and do this,” he said.
“It’s absolutely disgusting. They should be left out to dry.”
More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the Reclaim Princes Park vigil later today.
Event organiser Megan Bridger-Darling wanted the focus on Eurydice Dixon’s life and her legacy.
“Today is about love and celebrating Eurydice and today is about a community saying ‘no, that’s enough’,” she said.
She expressed disgust and disappointment at the vandalism but said she would not let it claim the focus from today.
“It’s absolutely galling that that behaviour... does happen,” she said.
“It’s insulting to everyone involved.”
The disgraceful act comes days after 22-year-old Eurydice Dixon’s body was found in the middle of a soccer pitch in Carlton North.
A 19-year old man was charged with one count each of murder and rape.
A number of exhibits were seized at the scene.
The police dog squad also went through the area.
Police said the markings will be removed as soon as possible. The investigation is ongoing.
