Vandals have targeted sculptures at multiple sites, including Geelong, which were part of the Royal Children’s Hospital 150th anniversary arts trail.
The sculptures, called UooUoos, are an imaginary creature that is a cross between a dugong and a wombat.
According to the UooUoo app, at least 10 have been removed to be repaired, including one at Eastern Beach and another on Little Malop St.
Around 100 of them have been dotted through public spaces in Melbourne and eight sculptures in various Geelong locations.
Photos posted to Facebook show the bases for the installations sitting bare, leaving many to question where they had gone.
“We are disappointed that some UooUoo sculptures in Melbourne and Geelong have been damaged since launching Me and UooUoo: The RCH150 Anniversary Art trail last week,” a spokesperson from the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation said.
“As a result, our dedicated team at the RCH Foundation, Blu Event Productions, Forks 2 U and Multiplex are continuing to safely remove, repair and reinstall damaged sculptures in a matter of days.
“The sponsors, artists and councils involved with this event have been extremely understanding of these unfortunate incidents and we hope that we do not encounter many, if any, more cases of graphitised or chipped UooUoo’s.”
The arts trail of sculptures will remain in place until March 21.
