Man charged after pair allegedly flee fatal M1 crash near Tweed

A man is under police guard in hospital and has now been charged after allegedly fleeing a fatal crash on the M1 on Tuesday night.

A MAN is under police guard in hospital after he allegedly ran from the scene of a horrific crash that killed a man.

Investigations are underway following the death about 11.30pm on Tuesday night on the Pacific Highway at Tweed Heads.

It's understood the now deceased driver of a Kia hatchback had attempted to do a U-turn, before he was hit by a Mazda 3 allegedly travelling more than 170km/h.

It will be alleged the two men inside the Mazda ran from the scene, before they were found and arrested by officers from the Tweed.

A man has been charged with a number of offences including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, failure to stop and assist, licence expired, and negligent driving occasioning death.

It’s understood investigators are looking into whether drugs, alcohol and speed played a part in the crash.

In a statement, New South Wales police said the men were taken to hospital for minor injuries.

“The two male occupants of the Mazda 3 left the crash site prior to the arrival of emergency services,” the statement read.

“They were located near the crash site by officers from Tweed/Byron Police District. They were placed under arrest before being taken to Tweed Heads and Gold Coast Hospitals for treatment to non-life-threatening injuries.

“Officers from the Northern Region Crash Investigation Unit were called and have now commenced investigations.”

It follows a horror year on Gold Coast roads, with the recent deaths of four people on Nerang Murwillumbah Road in Advancetown, when their car veered into oncoming traffic and into a utility. All four died at the scene.

TWO men who allegedly fled the scene of a fatal crash on Tuesday night have been arrested.

A man was killed in the crash on the M1 at Tweed Heads around 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Police say a Kia hatchback and a Mazda 3 both collided while travelling south near Kennedy Drive.

The male driver of the Kia died at the scene, while two men travelling in the Mazda 3 allegedly fled before emergency crews arrived.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District located the pair near the crash site a short time later.

Both men were placed under arrest before being taken to Tweed Heads and Gold Coast Hospitals for treatment to non life-threatening injuries.

The M1 was closed southbound in the area until just before 9.15am this morning with the Crash Investigation Unit on the scene until the area was reopened.

Investigations are continuing.
