TWO people have been fined for intentionally bypassing biosecurity control checkpoints in a bid to avoid mandatory quarantine while leaving the NT.

The 33-year-old woman and 36-year-old man recently returned to their community in the MacDonnell Region in South Australia, but deliberately avoided biosecurity checkpoints in the NT, set up to protect vulnerable communities from the risk of coronavirus, on the way.

Upon entering their own community they would have had to self-isolate for 14 days.

The pair have each been fined $1099.

NT Police and Environmental Health Officers are continuing to undertake compliance activities and say they will identify anyone who attempts to avoid checkpoints.

So far in the NT, authorities have completed 12,919 compliance checks and issued 62 fines.
