A teenager has been charged after he allegedly spat in the face of two police officers in what was one of two assaults on cops overnight.

The two unrelated incidents occurred overnight, one in Alice Springs and one in Darwin.

He said at the Watch House the teen allegedly spat in the faces of the two cops.

“I am at a loss to explain how any individual could think it was acceptable to intentionally spit on one of our police officers or any other frontline worker for that matter,” he said.

“The police in the Northern Territory joined to help Territorians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we accept that comes with inherent risks.

“However, what I and my colleagues should never have to accept is the filthy habit of being spat on. It needs to stop now”.

He has been charged with two counts of assault a member of the police force and one count of criminal damage and appear in court on a later date.

In a separate matter, a 42-year-old woman allegedly assaulted a police officer following an incident at Darwin Watch House last night. Charges are expected to be laid later this afternoon.

In a separate incident St John Ambulance paramedics were forced to leave a patient and their car behind and flee after a man became aggressive while they were trying to treat someone in Stuart, Alice Springs.

Supt Deutrom said at 8pm the paramedics were treating a woman while a man began to hinder them form doing their job.

“The male charged at the officers who feared they were about to be assaulted,” Supt Deutrom said.

“St John Ambulance officers fled on foot leaving their equipment and vehicle on scene for a short period.

“Police were called unable to locate or identify the man. St John Ambulance completed the treatment of the female.”

He warned those who assaulted a cop or emergency service worker faced a maximum of 16 years imprisonment.
