“LUCK it seems, was in scarce supply that day”.
The family of teen kayaker Valentine Bester found dead last week has expressed their grief and thanks for those involved in the search for the young man in a heartfelt statement.
The young man set off from Roches Beach on his kayak on October 1, attempting to cross Frederick Henry Bay to Lime Bay amid souring weather conditions.
A member of the public located Valentine’s body around 9.30am on October 2 at Slopen Main, about 4km south of Lime Bay. Police found his kayak shortly after.
“The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all those who were involved in the search for our dear Valentine,” the family’s statement reads.
“We recognise the efforts made were the very best possible and the personal sacrifice that many would have made to be there and help search, including the emotional strength and energy this task takes.
“Though deeply saddened that the outcome was not what we were all hoping for, the degree of professionalism, sensitivity and effort offered us a sense of shared load and care and at least some small hope if only for a while.
“Please know our appreciation.
“We also wish to acknowledge all the thoughtful comments and gestures made here, both before and after Valentine was found. He was loved dearly and leaves a huge hole in our hearts.
“Blossoming from boy to man and embracing life, his adventurous spirit and determination tragically overrode judgement, luck it seems was in scarce supply that day. It is warming to know we do not hold this loss alone.”
A funeral notice placed in the Mercury reads:
“Valentine left us unexpectedly and abruptly. He has left a gaping hole in the lives of all who loved him. Admired son of William and Elizabeth. Brother of Eliza-Grace and Hermione.”
Social media users also expressed their grief – many of whom knew the young man.
“So very sad. I will miss seeing his smiling face. He was a customer at my work in Eastlands. A very polite and friendly young bloke. My heart aches for the family,” wrote one commenter.
“Couldn’t meet a nicer person around school condolences are with the family and friends rest easy buddy,” said another.
A funeral service will be held next week and family and friends have been asked to wear something colourful in honour of Valentine.
