DARWIN council’s pre-cyclone season waste collection has rolled out of the northern suburbs and into the city as it moves into Zone 2, with more rubbish set to be collected from verges in 2020 compared to last year.

Engineering and City Services general manager Ron Grinsell said with more rubbish still to be weighed, council’s convoy had already collected 349 tonnes of waste, two more from Zone 1 than they did in 2019.
“This year we are using a convoy of trucks to remove all items from streets and it is working very well,” he said.
“Residents are happy because all items are being picked up at once, leaving the verges clear.”
Mr Grinsell noted the early onset of the wet season was likely to impact the service.
“We are asking residents in Zone 2 to be a little patient … the rain over the weekend is likely to cause delays with collection and items will be on verges for longer than we would like.”
“For people who do want items recycled we are asking that they take these directly to HPA, as rain is likely to cause damage, leaving them unable to be recycled.”

Zone 2 will see rubbish collected from Rapid Creek and Millner into Darwin CBD.
