Author and activist Deni Todrovic has hit back at critics of their collab with celebrated swimwear brand Seafolly after being subjected to a storm of online abuse.
Seafolly announced Todrovic, who is non-binary, as its latest brand representative – the label’s first transgender ambassador – marking the occasion with a stunning photo shoot.
In the shoot, Todrovic wore a high-cut, lime green bikini bottom, with a matching sleeveless, floor-length cover-up, and towering heels.
But the announcement prompted strong backlash, with some claiming Seafolly and Todrovic were making a mockery out of women.
Now Todrovic has responded to the critics in a powerful Instagram video, addressing claims they are trying to “eradicate biological women”.
“Some women do have penises,” Todrovic said.
“Some trans women don’t feel the need to have any kind of gender surgery. Some of them can’t afford it. Women come in all different shapes and sizes,” they said.
“I’m also not trying to eradicate women darling. I’m wearing bikini bottoms which are basically Speedos which last time I checked people with penises wear Speedos.”
With suicide rates among the trans community far higher than the cis community, Todrovic said Seafolly’s incredible response to their collab “literally has the power to save lives”.
“We are here to celebrate the Australian beach lifestyle and inspire one another to feel confident at the beach,” Seafolly said in a statement.
“In this community, we do not tolerate abusive, offensive, hateful language, trolling, deliberate disruption of discussion, or spam.
“Please be respectful of each other’s differences and remember to always be kind.”
Todorovič has become a big name in the Australian fashion industry, and recently released their first book, Love This For You: How to Rewrite the Rules and Live Authentically.
They are also a national ambassador for Bonds underwear.
Seafolly has been contacted for comment.
