Cancer cases surge amid COVID-19 lockdowns

Torquay’s Anne Johnson describes being diagnosed with cancer as an out of body experience.

The grandmother of seven was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2018, after a routine screening detected a lump.

“I had no idea I had a lump,” she said.

“Breast screening probably saved my life.”

Ms Johnson, 61, underwent a lumpectomy, had five lymph nodes removed as a preventive measure, and had radiation therapy.

“Radiation isn’t fun, you’ve got to go there every weekday for six weeks,” she said.

She also is on hormone medication, with a five-year course required.

Ms Johnson urged people to be vigilant about their health and to prioritise routine screening appointments and check-ups.

The Daffodil Day Appeal is raising funds for Cancer Council’s lifesaving cancer research this month, and will culminate with Daffodil Day on Friday.

Victorians are encouraged to donate a daffodil online.

Ms Johnson called on the community to donate, saying cancer somehow touched the lives of every family. For more information or to donate, visit daffodilday.com.au or call 1300 656 585.

Anyone who is affected by cancer and worried about the current situation surrounding COVID-19 can call Cancer Council’s information and support line 13 11 20.
