Sydney chart toppers the Rubens have dedicated their pop-up Melbourne shows to their hero Michael Gudinski.
Gudinski championed the band for their whole career and saw their fourth album, 0202, hit No. 1 last month.
“He called me as he always would to pass on his congratulations,” Rubens’ singer Sam Margin said.
“He said how proud he was that we’d finally got a No. 1 album after 10 years. Looking back it was a nice way of having a final conversation with him. It’s hard to think that we’re not going to get those 2am phone calls or see him after a show anymore.”
The band came to Melbourne to play three pop-up busking gigs this afternoon – an initiative Gudinski began to help return live music to the CBD.
A heart-shaped arrangement of roses in tribute was place in front of the band in tribute to Gudinski.
“We dedicated the shows to him,” Margin said.
“With someone like Michael you think ‘What would he want?’ and it’s pretty clear he’d want the show to go on and for the band to play on, especially if it was a band he loved. No one did more for us than he did.”
The band supported Gudinski getting a State Funeral.
“If anyone deserves a State Funeral he does. Melburnians care so much about music and that’s all down to Michael Gudinski.”
