CREWS DOUSE TWO BUSHFIRES ON ‘HIGH’ FIRE DANGER DAY
Kasey Wilkins
TWO blazes were brought under control by fire crews as extreme heat and winds lashed the state during the hottest day of summer so far.
Firefighters responded to a 16-hectare fire at Ouse and six-hectare fire at Broadmarsh during the afternoon, as parts of the state faced severe or very high fire danger and temperatures of up to 37C.
Broadmarsh was facing extreme winds as crews worked to bring the fire under control, using helicopters and planes to dump water.
Local Nick Oakhim felt confident while watching on from his nearby property at Andersons Rd.
He said he was a new member of the local brigade but hadn’t yet had the chance to attend many call-outs.
“I’m feeling okay. I know the guys are really well-prepared and we’re lucky there aren’t too many other fires in the region, so they’re throwing everything at it,” he said.
“We’re prepared, too. It doesn’t feel as bad as it felt last year, and that one was further away.
“The response is really great, and that’s all that you can ask for really.”
As of Monday evening, the Broadmarsh fire was under control with crews working to put out hot spots and the situation at Ouse was being monitored by the land owner.
Regional Fire Controller Phil Smith said they were able to contain the small fires today with quick responses, including pre-positioned teams at Cambridge and New Norfolk ready to respond as fires were detected.
However the risk of bushfires extends into the months and weeks ahead, he said.
“Tasmanians need to remain vigilant, prepare their properties and ensure they have a bushfire survival plan,” he said.
Acting Regional Chief Ian Bounds said he had received no reports of noncompliance during the state’s total fire ban.
Twelve municipalities in the south were included in the ban, which ran until 2am Tuesday.
“Days like this are when we really rely on the public,” he said.
“If they do see smoke, we’re asking (them) to report it immediately so we can investigate and respond appropriately.”
He said alongside the fires at Ouse and Broadmarsh, crews also responded to a small incident at Bridgewater which was quickly dealt with.
It is unknown whether any of Monday’s fires were deliberately lit.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the highest temperature for Monday was 37 degrees, which was recorded near New Norfolk and Richmond.
Hobart reached 36 degrees and Launceston 30 degrees.
Today is expected to be much cooler across the state, with a south-westerly wind change arriving around dawn in Hobart.
A cold front will bring showers for most of the state with chances of an isolated thunderstorm in the east on this morning.
