Record Low Temperatures Bring Rare Snow to Rural South Australia

A ROAD weather warning has been extended by the Bureau of meteorology warning of icy conditions on some Tasmanian roads this morning.

BOM is warning of potentially dangerous morning in parts of the Central North, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

This comes after another freezing morning at Liawenee in Central Tasmania.

BOM observed the temperature plummeting to -11.7C this morning which saw nearby lakes, such as Little Pine Lagoon, completely freeze over.

On Friday, Liawenee recorded the state’s lowest temperature on record at just -14.2C.

ROAD CLOSURES CURRENT TO 10.30PM, AUGUST 10:

THE FOLLOWING ROADS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO SNOW AND ICE:

SOUTH:

  • Clifton Vale Road to Cockatoo Gully Road, Elderslie.
  • Old Man’s Head Road, Interlaken.
  • Tunbridge Tier Road, Tunbridge.
  • Pinnacle Road, from The Springs.

THE FOLLOWING ROADS ARE ONLY OPEN TO 4WD VEHICLES:

  • Arthurs Lake Road, Arthurs Lake 4×4 only from Roadhouse onward.
  • Belvoir Road and Cradle Mountain Road between Leary’s Corner and Vale River – Extreme caution to be taken. Ice treatment completed.
  • Highland Lakes Road- Riversdale Rd (Liffey Falls) to Lochiel Drive, Miena.
  • Lake Dobson Road, Westerway. Extreme caution 4 x 4 and 2WD vehicles with chains only.
  • Lake Leake Road between Campbell Town and Swansea.
  • Prossers Road, Nunamara.
  • Woodspring Road, Lower Marshes.
  • Gunns Road, Mathinna.

ON THE FOLLOWING ROADS, MOTORISTS SHOULD USE CAUTION:

  • Highland Lakes Road – Drive with caution due to light snow from River Dale Road to Miena.
  • Grasstree Hill Rd between Richmond and Risdon Vale
  • Huon Highway due to patchy ice from Sandfly to Grove
  • Lake St Clair Rd due to patchy ice conditions
  • Mole Creek Road/Liena Road/Mersey Forest Road – Frost patches between flashing signs at the Needles. Caution signs in place. Treatment completed.
  • Midland Highway, Constitution Hill due to ice.
  • Murchison Highway – Frost patches on Mt Black. Caution signs in place.
  • Nicholls Rivulet Road due to patchy ice conditions
  • Poatina Road from Highland Lakes Road to Poatina Village.
  • Lyell Highway – Frost patches between Mt Arrowsmith and Derwent Bridge. Also patchy ice at Wayatinah. Caution signs in place.
  • Lyell Highway – Black ice between Nelson Falls and Donaghy Hill.
  • Tasman Highway – patchy ice in elevated areas.
  • Waratah Road – frost patches between Waratah and Savage River. Caution signs in place.
