Tasmania’s highest rainfalls were at Gray, kunanyi/Mt Wellington, St Patricks Head, Nugent and Buckland

Several roads in the North have been closed due to flooding this morning, as the wet weather is set to continue throughout the week, following a weekend of heavy downpours. FORECAST, WARNINGS + CLOSURES >>

WET weather is set to continue across eastern Tasmania in the coming days following a weekend of heavy downpours.

Rain persisted across the state’s east overnight on Saturday and into Sunday with the Bureau of Meteorology reporting 20-30mm of rainfall reported across the central east, 5-15mm over the southeast and 5-10mm through central areas.

The highest falls were 44mm at Gray and kunanyi/Mt Wellington, 39mm at St Patricks Head, 32mm at Nugent, 29mm at Buckland.

ROAD CLOSURES:

The following roads are closed to all traffic due to flooding.

  • Glen Esk Road, Conara
  • Bonneys Road, South Esk
  • Leona Road. Avoca
  • Storys Creek, Avoca
  • Royal George Road, Avoca

Junior sailor Ellen Hillcoat, 17, of Launceston, said it was a great day to be out on the Derwent.

“I’m all rugged up in my wet weather gear … racing was pretty good despite the weather,” she said.

Wind warnings are in place for the Central north Coast, and east of Flinders Island today, while tomorrow, there are strong wind warnings for the majority of Tasmania’s north coast; the Far North West Coast, Central North Coast, east of Flinders Island, Upper East Coast, South West Coast and Central West Coast.

A flood watch was issued for the northern, eastern and southeast river catchment.

FLOOD SUMMARY:

  • Moderate Flood Warning for the South Esk River
  • Minor Flood Warning for the Jordan River
  • Minor Flood Warning for the Macquarie River
  • Flood Warning for the Coal River
  • Final Flood Warning for the North Esk River
  • Flood Watch for North, North East, East Coastal, South East, Derwent and Huon catchments

Road crews were called to the Tasman Highway near Orford on Sunday morning to clear rocks and debris washed onto the road at Paradise Gorge.

Showers are forecast for Hobart for the rest of the working week, with clouds and some heavier winds towards the end of the week.

Temperatures are set to drop as the week progresses with a maximum of 12 degrees predicted on Thursday and 10 degrees on Friday.
