TASMANIAN Senator Jacqui Lambie will this afternoon table a Bill which would result in an immediate ban on wearing the Muslim veil.
The Bill would cover any facial coverings and would come into effect when the terrorist threat level reached “probable” – the third highest of Australia’s five threat levels.
Australia’s threat level is understood to be probable at present and the passing of the Bill would result in an immediate ban.
The Bill is expected to be debated next Thursday in private Senators time.
Banning the burqa has been controversial around the world with France instituting a ban in 2010.
In 2014 then-speaker Bronwyn Bishop and then-senate president Stephen Parry sought to ban the facial coverings in Federal Parliament but ultimately backed down.
A “burqa” ban is favoured by many conservative politicians with Pauline Hanson recently calling for a ban if One Nation won the Queensland election.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said in response to Ms Hanson that Australia was not a country where we tell people what to wear.
Liberal defector Cory Bernardi has been another to advocate the bans since as far back as 2011.
