Scott Morrison less popular than Anthony Albanese for the first time, Newspoll shows

Scott Morrison ranks below Anthony Albanese on key leadership traits for the first time, a fresh Newspoll reveals.

PM Morrison trails Albanese in trust and likability according to new poll

Scott Morrison’s popularity has fallen below Anthony Albanese’s for the first time, according to a Newspoll.

Australians still see the prime minister as more experienced and decisive than the Opposition Leader. Mr Morrison also scores higher with respect to his vision for Australia.

But for the first time, the PM trails Mr Albanese on trust, likability, caring and understanding of major issues of concern.

He is also considered more arrogant and not in touch with voters, according to the poll commissioned for The Australian.

On Monday, Mr Morrison described himself as an underdog while campaigning in the Sydney division of Lindsay.

“Well, I think that’s fairly clear. And I’ve been there before, on more than one occasion,” he said.

“And what I’m thrilled to be doing is, having spent pretty much since June locked up in various quarantines and other lockdowns in NSW and Canberra, I am just pleased to be out and about, talking to people.”

The poll also found the Coalition has risen from its worst slump since the last election.

However, with a two-point lift in the primary vote to 37 per cent, the Coalition trails Labor by one point.

Support for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation fell a point to 2 per cent while support for other minor parties also dropped a point from a post-election high of 13 per cent in the previous two polls.

The Greens remain unchanged at 11 per cent.

There has been a slight two-party-preferred improvement for the Coalition, which now trails Labor 47-53 per cent – up from 46-54 per cent.
