A GOLD Coast high school student impaled by a javelin in a accident during a PE session will recover from the horrific incident.

Paramedics were called to Saint Stephen’s College in Upper Coomera just before 11am.

It is understood a 12-year-old boy was trying to retrieve a javelin and attempted to jump over it while it was embedded in the ground.

He then tripped and fell on top of it.

QAS officer Stuart Cutajar said the boy had a penetrating injury to his groin, and was treated for the injury on scene.

It is understood firefighters helped to remove the javelin before the boy was taken to hospital.

“Fire and Emergency services officers assisted us in removing the object, and that patient was able to be treated on scene, loaded and transported to the university hospital,” he said.

“He was in a stable condition, there was very minimal blood loss, he remained in a conscious and in an alert status.”

Mr Cutajar praised the school for their emergency response.

“He was very lucky and treated effectively, the paramedics did a great job and the hospital was expecting his arrival,” he said.

The high acuity response unit and critical care paramedics attended the scene.

A spokesman for the Saint Stephen’s College said the year 7 student’s injuries had been deemed non-life-threatening.

“The college nurse rendered assistance until the Queensland Ambulance Service arrived on scene and transported the student to the Gold Coast University Hospital,” the spokeswoman said.

“The student’s parents were immediately contacted and support is being offered to those impacted by the incident.

“The welfare of our students remains the number one priority of the College.”

The boy was recovering from his injury and in a stable condition this afternoon, according to a Gold Coast Health spokeswoman.
