South Australian Liberal Senator Lucy Gichuhi hopes her newly published book will empower women.
Called Behind The Smile: From the Slopes of Mount Kenya to Commonwealth Parliament of Australia, itoutlines her childhood as a barefoot farmer who did not own a pair of shoes until she was 12 to becoming a senator.
Through her family’s financial struggles, Senator Gichuhi speaks candidly about her journey as both a woman and mother and life in Adelaide. It also details allegations of domestic violence The Advertiser cannot publish for legal reasons.
Promoting the book on her website, Senator Gichuhi writes that “we women need to start talking seriously about deep issues that affect us and shed light on the truth”.
“I have told my own story by writing a book.”
Senator Gichuhi made headlines last year when she threatened to publicly name Liberal MPs that allegedly bullied her under parliamentary privilege. She also revealed there was a “widespread” culture of intimidation. Senator Gichuhi is in the unwinnable fourth spot for re-election on the Liberal Senate ticket at the upcoming federal election. She was not available for comment.
