An Uber Eats driver who was caught on camera allegedly urinating in a Sydney apartment elevator while making a delivery has been sacked.
According to 2GB, CCTV footage showed the man walking into the lift of an apartment building in Artarmon in Sydney’s North Shore on March 10 while holding a takeaway bag from Betty’s Burgers.
The man – whose back is facing towards the camera – then reportedly reaches for his pants and moves into the front corner of the lift.
A noticeable wet patch is later visible on the carpet of the lift after the driver steps out.
On Tuesday morning, 2GB host Ben Fordham revealed the driver’s account has now been deactivated, meaning he can no longer work for them.
In a statement to news.com.au on Monday, an Uber Eats spokesperson confirmed the company was investigating the incident and “strongly condemn this kind of behaviour, which has no place on the Uber platform”.
“Our community guidelines clearly set out the rules that we expect all users including delivery people to follow, and breach of these guidelines can result in loss of access to the Uber app,” they said.
NSW Police confirmed officers have launched an investigation and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Describing the footage on Monday, Fordham said there was “no mistaking” what the driver had done.
“All of the elevator floor is dry then he starts fiddling with the front of his pants and then he’s pressing the buttons in the lift. And he seems to be obsessed with this corner of the lift. We know why, because he’s taking a pee,” he said.
“He’s standing there for I don’t know, 10 to 15 seconds as the elevator is going up … then he does something to adjust the front of his pants and he steps outside, leaving behind the wet patch.”
Fordham said the footage shows the driver holding the “food in his right hand and his willy in his left hand”.
One resident and secretary of the building, Geoffrey Grasso said he believes the delivery driver swapped hands as he exited the elevator.
“It’s just revolting,” Mr Grasso told 2GB, adding other residents have been left “disgusted” by the incident.
“I don’t know what goes through somebody’s mind to think that that in any way, shape, size or form, (is) acceptable.”
Mr Grasso said “all the evidence that we have” suggests the food delivery driver worked for Uber Eats.
“It raises a whole bunch of questions about their food handling training of their drivers at the very, very least,” he said.
“But the one thing that literally disgusts me is the fact that he is holding those people’s food while he is urinating and then delivers it to them.”
Mr Grasso claimed that while the elevator has been cleaned it “still smells” and requires thousands of dollars of repairs.
“We may well need to change the carpet … it’s going to mount up. The building manager estimates no less than $2,000 just for that,” he said.
“It’s just a disgusting thing to do, it breaches any form of normal etiquette and health standards. I’m sure if he was that desperate and said to the resident in question ‘may I use your toilet’, I’m sure they would have said yes.”
