Organisers of this Saturday’s Wreck2Reef open water swim say there has been a surge in registrations, with entries fast closing in on the cap of 500 entrants.
Wreck2Reef co-event director Andrew Dix said a lack of open water swims being held across summer due to the COVID-19 restrictions had led to increased interest in the event at Indented Head.
“The irony is as in this year we are likely to have a record fleet and more swimmers than we have ever had before, purely because there are such limited opportunities for the swimmers to come and compete anywhere,” Mr Dix said.
“The swimmers are keen to go anywhere where there is an event on.”
Organised as a fundraiser for the Indented Head Yacht Club, Mr Dix said entries had exceeded 380, with Wreck2Reef organisers forced to introduce a 500-person cap limit for 2.5 kilometre and 1.2km participants due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
“The biggest factor in our favour was the size of our swim which built up to around 350 last year,” he said.
“When you compare that to things like the Lorne Pier to Pub, which has many thousands of people involved in it, the impracticalities of running an event that size due to COVID were things we thought we could manage with a smaller event. So on that basis we decided to press ahead.”
Mr Dix said all swimmers must be pre-registered online, as organisers are unable to take any registrations on the day.
