But upon arrival, paramedics found it was an injured turtle they had been called out to treat, rather than a human body.

“Someone’s backed out of the driveway or come across a turtle in their driveway,” said St John Ambulance Territory Duty manager Craig Garraway.

What’s happened is they’ve called the triple-0 system here, I think there’s been some communication or language barrier issues,” he said.

“It’s come across as body laying face down so we’ve responded, with paramedics and critical response and on arrival found a turtle on the driveway obviously injured, may have been hit by a car.”

Mr Garraway said while St John wasn’t the best service to call in this sort of incident he understood people’s instinct was to call triple-0.

“I understand why they’ve done it … our paramedics and comms team have been able to locate an organisation called Wildcare and basically they’ve come and taken ownership of the turtle and hopefully it’ll make a full recovery,” he said.

“There are a number of wildcare rescue services available in Darwin people can call in these instances, they just need to look on line for them.”

The NT News can confirm that a rumour that the CareFlight Shell-icopter was also called out to the incident is not true.
