Six new COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Greater Geelong today, as the outbreak at a Colac abattoir swells to 43 cases days after emerging.

Cases in the Colac Otway Shire, where the Australian Lamb Company abattoir is based, have risen by 17 since Thursday to 43.

On Friday active cases in Greater Geelong rose from 23 to 29.

But active cases in the Golden Plains Shire have dropped from eight to six overnight, and

cases in the Surf Coast Shire (4) remain the same as Thursday.

Across the state 300 cases were recorded on Friday. Seven deaths from the virus, all people in their 80s and 90s, were recorded. Five were linked to aged care facilities.

206 people are in hospital with coronavirus including 41 in intensive care.

Of the total cases, including those that have recovered, 424 are from regional Victoria while 6825 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne.

The City of Wyndham, which borders Greater Geelong, has 460 active cases, 21 more than Thursday.

Forty-four cases have been linked to Glendale Aged care facility in Werribee.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Friday that Australian Defence Force members would be used to contact trace positive cases who could not be reached by phone.

Thursday’s figures included 29 cases linked to Australian Lamb Company in Colac, and

23 active cases in Greater Geelong, eight in Golden plains Shire, four in the Surf Coast Shire, 26 in the Colac Otway Shire and one in Corangamite Shire.

The government said mask wearing is optional in regional Victoria if you are unable to social distance.

Mask wearing has been made mandatory in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire.

Of those areas Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said: “If you live in these areas, there are only four reasons to leave your home: shopping for food and essential items; care and caregiving; daily exercise; and work and study – if you can’t do it from home.”

Victoria has recorded 7405 cases of COVID-19, 3734 cases are active and 3450 people have recovered.
