Exclusive: More than 1.73 million Australians who have received at least one dose of the Covid vaccine are already in the running for a $1 million cash prize, with Victorian suburbs taking the lead in entries.
A group of philanthropists and corporations known as the Million Dollar Vax Alliance launched the hard-to-resist campaign earlier this month in a bid to boost national vaccination rates.
With less than two weeks to go before the big prize is announced, Alliance chair Craig Winkler said they’ve been “pleased” to receive entries from thousands of areas across the country.
“We are thrilled by the number of entries we have received to date in the Million Dollar Vax campaign,” he said.
“Not surprisingly we have seen a significant spike in entries in Victoria which is a great result as it is in line with their strong vaccination rates.
“We are extremely pleased to have received entries from more than 3600 postcodes across Australia.”
Four Victorian local government areas (LGAs) dominate the list of people who have gone into the draw, followed by two NSW LGAs and one from both Queensland and Canberra.
The alliance has been handing out 100 gift cards every day worth $1000 throughout October, in addition to the ultimate $1 million prize, which will be drawn on November 5.
Already, $1.4 million worth of gift cards have been won in daily prizes.
However, there are still more than $1.3 million worth of gift cards up for grabs in addition to the grand prize.
The milestone comes as further restrictions were lifted for people who are fully vaccinated after NSW hit its 80 per cent double-vaccination target on Saturday, a week earlier than expected.
Latest data shows more than 92 per cent of the state’s residents aged 16 and over have had one dose of vaccine, and 80.3 per cent are fully vaccinated.
The national lottery campaign was inspired by the successful Ohio ‘Vax-A-Million’ campaign in the United States, which gave $1 million to five lucky residents who had received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Some of the donors include the Susan McKinnon foundation, Jasper foundation and the P & S Bassat foundation.
Others have chosen to remain anonymous as they wanted the focus to be on “giving back to the community” rather than their contribution.
Entry into the Million Dollar Vax can be made at www.milliondollarvax.com.
All Australians aged 18 and over are eligible to enter, with those already vaccinated still eligible to win, provided both vaccinations have been received by six weeks after October 31, 2021.
