ALICE SPRINGS froze through one of its coldest mornings this year on Tuesday with birdbaths around town freezing over.
The temperature dropped to -0.9C on Tuesday morning, matching the lowest temperature on record this year, which was first recorded in June.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Angeline Prasad said Alice Springs has had about 10 sub-zero temperatures recorded so far this winter with more set to come this week.
“It has been dipping below zero quite regularly in Alice Springs,” she said.
“The average number of sub-zero nights in Alice Springs based on climate records is 12.5 for the winter months of June through to August.
“But it hasn’t been dropping down to much lower temperatures that are significantly below zero. In places like Arltunga which is north east of Alice Springs, it has been dipping lower. It got down to minus 4.2C in June.”
Alice Springs is forecast for temperatures to drop down to -1C up until Friday with minimum temperatures set to rise over the weekend. The coldest temperate on record in Alice Springs is -7.5C, which was recorded back in 1976.
