RETAILERS are getting ready for the onslaught of shoppers ahead of next month’s Cairns Amateurs after the carnival raked in more than $2 million in racewear sales last year.
Cairns Amateurs chief executive Graham Thornton said the event was second to none when it came to the fashion stakes.
“From suits and dresses to shoes and millinery, last year’s carnival recorded almost $2.5 million in fashion expenditure, which is a significant boost for local retailers. It is all about making hay while the sun shines,” he said.
Cairns Central Shopping Centre marketing manager Louise Struber said the cash spent went a long way towards supporting local jobs and local businesses.
She said most people who ventured into the shopping centre during the next three weeks would be on the hunt for the perfect races look.
“Cairns Amateurs is one of our biggest and most highly anticipated events on the city’s social calendar,” she said.
In anticipation of the Cairns Amateurs next month, the carnival’s iconic silver horses have been placed in shopping centres across Cairns, including Myer, The Pier Shopping Centre, DFO Cairns and Stockland Earlville.
