Meet the Aussies taking part in Charles’ coronation

Aussie military personnel are set to take up important roles when King Charles is crowned in London in a fortnight.

Aussie military personnel are preparing to play key roles at King Charles’ coronation in London.

In what will be a milestone in history, King Charles will be officially crowned alongside The Queen Consort, Camilla, at a ceremony at Westminster Abbey on May 6.

Australian Defence Force personnel will be among military from across the Commonwealth taking part in the ceremony.

A 40-strong contingent from Australia’s Federation Guard, the military’s ceremonial unit, will play important duties in the Coronation Procession.

Alongside counterparts from across the world, they will take part in the procession from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace.

“The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort signifies the unerring obligation of Their Majesties to the Commonwealth, dedicating their lives to serve the nation,” Defence Minister Richard Marles said.

“The bestowal of the Crown and the investiture of regal power exemplifies the pledge of Their Majesties to a life of total dedication, duty and sacrifice.

“In line with The King and The Queen Consort’s ongoing faithful service to the Commonwealth, the Australian Defence Force’s representation at the Coronation demonstrates its tireless commitment to the Crown, the Government and the nation.”

On Australian soil, the military will also mark the occasion with a series of celebrations.

The ADF will fire a 21 gun salute at Canberra’s Parliament House on the afternoon of Sunday, May 7.

And on May 6 and 7, several buildings and monuments will be bathed in purple light to commemorate King Charles’ crowning.
