Mason Boseley is set to lose his luscious locks for the Andrew Love Cancer Centre, where his mother was cared for when she had breast cancer.
And it was a comment from the Geelong 12-year-old that led his mum, Tracey, to check her breasts and subsequently receive a diagnosis.
“In October last year we were watching a show about breast cancer and Mason asked if I checked my breasts,” Ms Boseley said.
“I thought ‘it’s been a while’, I checked my breasts and found a lump. In November, I got the result to find it wasn’t what we were hoping for.”
Ms Boseley had two lumps and six lymph nodes removed in surgery, and earlier this year had radiation therapy.
She is on ongoing hormone blocking treatment and will have checks twice a year.
“I’m lucky it was found early, and so lucky we’ve got Andrew Love Cancer Centre, the facility and people were just fantastic,” the 49-year-old said.
She urged women to be vigilant about checking their breasts.
Ms Boseley said she thought Mason’s charitable venture was lovely, and said he was blown away by how much money had been donated.
“Mason’s two older sisters can’t wait to get behind the clippers,” she said.
The Grade Six student has already raised more than $2700, and said his head would be shaved on September 18. Mason has been growing his hair since the start of the year.
Donations can be made online at the mycause page named Mason’s Shave.
