THE man at the centre of a six-hour siege at a Darwin CBD apartment building on Thursday has faced court for the first time.

Shem Reece Rotumah, 30, appeared in the Darwin Local Court on Friday on 18 charges, including deprivation of liberty, making threats to kill, assaulting police and seven counts of aggravated assault.

Rotumah did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until November 27.

He had surrendered to police about 5.10pm on Thursday when he was plucked from an alcove above the driveway of the Luma Luma apartments by a cherry picker after lengthy negotiations.

Earlier he had been throwing bottles and at one stage became stuck in a small hole in the wall next to his alcove.

Northern Watch Commander Andrew Heath said the siege started with a domestic violence incident the previous day.

Senior Sergeant Heath said a police officer who was allegedly struck with a glass bottle in the incident wasn’t seriously injured and had returned to work on Friday.

The dramatic scenes unfolded from about 11am on Thursday when police started hunting for the man in Darwin’s CBD, before finding him at the Luma Luma Hotel Apartments on Knuckey Street.

As police gave chase through Luma Luma, one onlooker described the man jumping and climbing from balcony to balcony as being like “a real-life Spider-Man”.
