A DRIVER of a Mercedes has died after the car caught on fire and collided with a metal light pole, as a result of being hit in the rear by another car.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Waverley Rd and Springvale Rd following reports of a car on fire at 1.50am.

Investigators have been told two cars were travelling on Waverley Rd approaching Springvale Rd when a Mazda sedan smashed into the rear of the car in front, a Mercedes sedan.
The Mercedes caught fire and, as a result of the impact, the vehicle mounted the median strip and collided with a metal light pole.
The driver of the Mazda veered off the road and collided with two cars on display in a car dealership before stopping at Springvale Rd.
The driver of the Mercedes, who was the sole occupant, died at the scene while the Mazda driver, also the only occupant in that vehicle, was conveyed to hospital with serious injuries.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are currently at the scene as they continue their investigations this morning.
At this stage police believe the driver of the Mercedes was a male.
Police are investigating if speed was a contributing factor in the collision.
