DARWIN Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis plans to pitch his Lameroo Baths development vision for the city to Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission co-chairman Andrew Liveris.

However, how much value Mr Vatskalis’ talks will hold is unclear. The Commission is not responsible for deciding on which individual projects should get up or not get up.

Mr Vatskalis’ Lameroo Baths push comes as the proposed RSL Esplanade development grinds to a halt amid claims of a sacred Indigenous site in the same area.

Mr Vatskalis told Mix 104.9’s Katie Woolf yesterday he was looking to meet with Mr Liveris with hopes of establishing a best angle of lobbying for the development of the Lameroo Baths.

But he said he wasn’t willing to go further on discussions until he had spoken with Mr Liveris.

However, he remained confident in council’s vision for the baths and the economic surge it could bring to the Territory.

“The reason this is happening is there is no economic development,” he said.

“People come to the Territory and Darwin when there are jobs available. If we are going to see population growth we have to find some plans that will attract people.”

Mr Vatskalis said the final product would also be one favourable among tourists, locals and retailers alike, while maintaining green space atop the Esplanade.

“We will start with a rock wall and a bust to create a beautiful area for Territorians and tourists to enjoy,” he said.

“That would extend all the way to a fish feeding area creating space for activities, restaurants, retail, anything it may need.

“It will be done in a way where it won’t impact on Bicentennial Park.”

The Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission is currently drafting the final report, which will contain recommendations to reform and modernise the NT economy, make it easier and better to do businesses in the Territory, create more jobs and attract more private investment.

The final report will be delivered to the Chief Minister in late November. The Commission does not have a mandate to make recommendations about specific projects to the NT government.
