Jetstar mega sale: Fly to Bali for $199

Aussie holidaymakers chasing a cheap getaway could be in luck with tens of thousands of fares set to go on sale.

Airfares across all airlines are ‘unbelievably high’

Australians chasing a post-Christmas getaway might be able to score a deal with more than 65,000 Jetstar fares set to go on sale.

Flights from as little as $39 will be up for grabs, with the carrier offering deals across 50 domestic and international routes from Thursday.

Sydneysiders can head to Auckland from $175, Ho Chi Minh City from $195 or Honolulu from $229.

Melburnians could hop over to Bali from $199 or Phuket for $219.

And if Japan is on the wish list, holidaymakers could score a seat from Cairns to Osaka from $259 or from the Gold Coast to Tokyo from $299.

It comes as a new ACCC report found domestic airfares have soared well above pre-pandemic levels – up 27 per cent in October 2022, compared to the same period in 2019.

“Airfares have risen due to strong demand for travel and constrained supply as airlines have scaled back their schedules in response to high jet fuel costs and operations challenges,” ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said.

The latest Airline Competition in Australia report found the price of discounted seats in economy had increased more than other fare types.

“We accept that the airlines are still experiencing some pandemic-related resource challenges, but the ACCC will be monitoring them closely to ensure they return capacity to the market in a timely manner to start easing pressure on airfares.”

“We would be concerned if airlines withheld capacity to keep airfares high,” Ms Brakey said.

The announcement of the discounted flights comes as almost 80 per cent of Aussies reported needing a post-Christmas break.

In a survey of 1800 Jetstar customers, 62 per cent of respondents cited wanting to wind down as the main reason they wanted a holiday after the festive season, while one in three (36 per cent) said they wanted to make the most of summer and 35 per cent wanted to spend more time outdoors.

Bali, Hawaii and Thailand were found to be the most popular destinations for people already planning an overseas trip, whereas the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Whitsundays were the top Australian destinations, the survey found.

For those still chasing gift ideas, a holiday might just be a winner with two thirds of respondents preferring to be gifted a holiday (or a voucher for a holiday) for Christmas, ahead of clothes and electronics or gadgets.

Jetstar expects the fares to be snapped up quickly but Club Jetstar members will have 12 hours of exclusive access from 12pm AEDT on Thursday before it opens to the rest of the public at midnight. The sale will end on Monday night, unless sold out prior.
