MELBOURNE’S most notorious underworld figure has put his house on the market, and the mobster has been living in a world of luxury.
The five bedroom, five bathroom home in an exclusive residential area in Lower Plenty in Melbourne’s northeast has been the estate of Mick Gatto, known as a ‘professional mediator’ within the building industry.
In 2004 Gatto was remanded in custody for 18 months after being charged with the murder of suspected underworld hitman Andrew Veniamin.
Gatto was later found not guilty and said Veniamin pointed a .38 gun at him and he acted in self defence.
The underworld figure was also part of an Underbelly series about Melbourne gangland killings.
His gated home is extravagant with 3.3m high ceilings and four separate living areas.
According to a real estate ad, the home has a gym with a sauna, an in-ground swimming pool with a spa, alfresco entertaining area and a floodlit tennis court.
“Those with fashionable taste will admire the three lavish chandeliers that dress the striking entry, formal lounge (with gas log fireplace) and adjoining formal dining with an opulent character, and if a passion for cooking runs deep, create culinary feasts inside the first-class emporite kitchen equipped with granite benchtops,” the ad said.
Inside Gatto’s luxury home is also a boxing ring and a billiards room which gives the home a “chalet-type persona”.
This sprawling suburban mansion is the same one where Gatto once kept a loaded sawn-off gun in his ensuite over fears of his life.
The 5 Roseburn Court property is expected to go for millions of dollars, Fairfax Media reports.
It sold for $2.1 million in 2005, according to real estate records.
Gatto’s home boasts a “superior security system” including CCTV, intercom access, a secure remote front gate and fully monitored back-to-base alarm system.
According to Fairfax Media, Gatto’s home is sitting on Melbourne’s “millionaire’s row” and is a French Provincial-style home on a 4019 square-metre plot.
The Herald Sun reports agents from Barry Plant Real Estate expect to fetch $3.8 million for the property.
