How to score free beer just by checking your power bill

Whether you’re cleaning the house or watching a footy game with mates, your home will be working hard to get you slabs of free beer.

Solar panels can slash your power bills — and now also score you free beer.

Victoria Bitter (VB) today launched Solar Exchange, enabling Aussie households to trade excess solar energy from their panels for slabs of VB.

Every $30 of excess solar traded with the brewer will earn a slab of VB delivered to your door.

For Aussies signed-up to the program, they’ll be able to see in real-time how much beer they’ve earned based on how much solar energy they’ve traded with VB.

VB’s Solar Exchange will trade a slab of beer for your excess solar.

The slabs will then be delivered each quarter in-line with the billing period.

VB spokesperson Brian Phan said: “We’re expecting that the typical participant in the program will be exchanging approximately three slabs per quarter.”

“Last year we put the Australian sun to work and started brewing VB with 100 per cent offset solar energy.

“Now we’ve launched this Aussie-first program to thank those who have made the effort to go solar with some hard-earned VB.”

Tristan Carlson, 32, a marine officer from Caboolture in Queensland, is looking forward to having a free, cold beer with mates under the sun.

“I’m so stoked about it and it’s definitely better than a poke in the eye,” he said.

“I feel like a suburban Jesus — he turned water into wine and I’m about to turn sunlight into beer.

“It’s a free slab and that would make anyone happy.”
