A CINEMA, fountains, clock tower, hair salon, chapel and a cafe called the Cane Cutter’s Wife have a clear path to construction after a major retirement village and housing project received the green light at Gordonvale.
The southern Cairns suburb has historically had very limited aged care options beyond the high-care Pyramid Residential Care Centre nursing home, with residents forced to move as they aged.

That looks like becoming a thing of the past after a Cairns Regional Council decision to approve a 162-unit retirement facility on a sugarcane farm on Draper Road.
The executors of the late Rose Straguszi, a prominent Gordonvale resident who died in 2019 aged 92, also plan to build a 51-lot residential subdivision on the farm.
“The truly unique component of the development is the central piazza comprising the extensive recreation facilities for all residents to enjoy including a cinema, chapel, games room, hairdresser, gym and cafe surrounded by extensive gardens, walking tracks and rest areas,” documents said.

“The piazza is designed to be an indoor/outdoor space that is visited and utilised by residents every day, so it is a meeting place and a recreational and interactive space that has constant activity.
“The piazza is the place where special events occur. These could include performances, demonstrations, markets, family days and the like which are all designed to promote a community/village feel.”
Only one submission was made against the project, with Mulgrave Mill owner MSF Sugar arguing agricultural land was already disappearing “at an alarming rate”.
