Gold Coast libraries to reopen from Monday, Robina and Palm Beach libraries to stay closed

LIBRARIES in Robina and Palm Beach will remain closed even as the rest of the Gold Coast’s libraries open their doors from Monday.

Most libraries will be open Monday to Friday from July 13, with Robina, Palm Beach and Book Box libraries still closed.

A council spokeswoman said it was “impractical” to reopen Palm Beach Library due to its size causing difficulty with social distancing requirements.

They added Robina Library is closed due to refurbishment works and is expected to open later this month.

Asked what safety measures were in place ahead of the opening: “All returned items are quarantined for a period of 72 hours before being made available for borrowing.

It’s been almost four months since the libraries officially shut doors.

“Library members will need to scan their membership cars upon entry and exit, to assist with contact tracing procedures.”

Increased cleaning measures and social distancing rules are also in place.

Libraries must also keep a register of library customers for at least 56 days.

It comes almost a month after outraged ratepayers demanded to know why the city’s 12 libraries remained closed while Brisbane, Logan and Redland councils allowed up to 20 borrowers inside at one time.

A council spokesperson said at the time: “They closed because of COVID-19 in March, and we are working towards opening them.”
