QANTAS and Jetstar have announced new flights for regions across Australia but the Gold Coast – the country’s tourism mecca – doesn’t feature at all.
The flights, announced this morning, will see capacity increase from five per cent of pre-COVID-19 levels to 15 per cent by the end of June.
In the new schedule the Gold Coast has been passed over for the likes of Mackay-Townsville (increase from three to five flights), Brisbane-Hervey Bay (zero to three flights) and Brisbane to Townsville and Cairns (zero to six flights).
It comes as the Bulletin today reveals that Gold Coast Airport has just three flights per week (all run by Virgin) as war rages over whether to reopen the NSW border.

Passenger numbers have dropped by 99 per cent, with a paltry 2000 people through the gates last month.
Qantas said this morning the new flights equated to more than 300 return flights per week.
“Additional flights will likely operate during July depending on travel demand and further relaxation of state borders, with the ability to increase to up to 40 per cent of the Group’s pre-crisis domestic capacity by the end of July,” the company said.
