THE search for a body isn’t usually a cheerful event – unless you are part of the Gold Coast Historical Society.

On the hunt for what lies beneath the Bundall museum site, the organisation enlisted the help of University of Queensland researchers and their ground-penetrating sonar in the bid to discover who might be at rest in the old burial ground.

Historical society president David Leitch said the site had always been a mystery, with just a handful of marked graves.

“We have records indicating this was a burial site but there is never been able to mark where the bodies are or how many are there,” he said.

To add to the mystery, some society members say there have been sightings of the paranormal by visitors to the area.

“Recently, we had a visitor who asked us about the group of children he saw playing in the forest, only there was nobody here.

“But this is a scientific search of a consecrated burial ground. This was the highest point in the Gold Coast at one time.”

The society plans to preserve and mark any graves that are uncovered by the search.
