AN oversupply of Girl Guides Tasmania treats will not go to waste this year, with the organisation donating boxes of its biscuits to charity.
A group of guides yesterday donated a surplus supply of their biscuits to the Foodbank van at Clarence. Foodbank Tasmania is a not-for-profit organisation that supplies food to more than 200 Tasmanian welfare agencies.
Girl Guides board member Christie Potter said the initiative came about after they found biscuit boxes were left over from their annual biscuit drive campaign.
“We thought it would be valuable to donate those to the Foodbank van for people less fortunate,” Ms Potter said.
“They have a good distribution network and their reach is much bigger than ours.”
Ms Potter said the charity would put the biscuits into some of their Christmas hampers this year.
Foodbank Tasmania chief executive Edward Gauden said two to three tonnes of biscuits donated by Girl Guides would be all gone by next week.
“It’s the first time that the Girl Guides have come to us and were keen to support Foodbank and we’re very thankful,” he said. “But it’ll be gone by the middle of next week, that’s the demand we have now.”
