High school dropouts who became millionaires

The honour roll of Geelong VCE results — and searchable database of those who achieved a score of 40 or more — can now be revealed after students learned their performance on Wednesday.

Christian College’s Shaun Altmann is understood to have recorded the region’s highest score.

The college dux said he was a “bit surprised” to wake up and learn he had received a 99.85 ATAR, including a perfect study score of 50 in software development.

“I always dreamt of being able to do really well, but to then actually do it was a bit hard to believe,” Shaun said.

The 17-year-old said he hopes to study mechatronics at university next year.

But a 15-year-old Kardinia International College student wasn’t far behind, with the Jan Juc teen receiving a 99.8 ATAR.

St Joseph’s College student Clancy Hehir was his school’s top performer with 99.65, while another three of his classmates also scored in the 99s.

Principal Tony Paatsch said he was “really proud” of the students and their results.

“A 2020 VCE certificate is a really powerful statement of a young person’s ability to persevere,” Mr Paatsch said.

More than six per cent of Kardinia students received an ATAR above 95, 15 per cent received an ATAR above 90, while the school achieved an averaged ATAR of 72.

Principal Catherine Lockhart congratulated students for “their resilience, adaptability, flexibility and overall positivity” throughout an unprecedented year.

Geelong College Danny Yang took out his school dux with an 99.80, and was one of six students with scores over 99.

Danny said he “could not be happier” with his results and was looking forward to beginning to studying a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University.

At Sacred Heart College, Freya Dess was named the school’s dux with a 99.25.
