MORE than $2 million worth of major road, footpath and facility upgrades have been announced across Geelong, in a bid to boost the city’s economic recovery from COVID-19.

A new shared path in Highton, upgraded athletics facilities in South Geelong and improved community safety measures at hoon-hotspot Limeburners Point are among the nine funded projects expected to be completed within six months.

The City of Greater Geelong on Tuesday revealed the list of upgrades it would undertake using it’s $2.18m slice of the Federal Government’s $500 million Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, announced in May.

“The list contains a good spread of projects across the region and each will significantly benefit the local community once finished,” Mayor Stephanie Asher said.

“In addition they’ll all create local jobs during construction and generate work for local suppliers.”

The projects include:

$500,000 for a new 1.4km shared path on Scenic Rd – between Barrabool Rd and Orana Rd – in Highton, in a bid to improve cyclists and pedestrians safety.

$500,000 for pavement reconstruction, stabilisation and widening on Reserve Rd, Charlemont, between Barwarre Rd and Barwon Heads Rd, to improve safety and cater to increased traffic.

$350,000 for pavement rehabilitation and asphalt overlay on a 731m stretch of Christies Rd in Leopold, between Portarlington Rd and the Bellarine Rail Trail – including a trial of a new recycled glass material in the base layer.

$200,000 to upgrade facilities at Landy Field in South Geelong, including change rooms, toilets, showers, hot water systems and a first aid room.

$200,000 gravel shoulder renewal works on Robbs Rd in Moorabool, between Ballan Rd and 300m west of Sutherlands Creek Rd.

$180,000 to complete a missing 560m footpath link between Boundary Rd and Cosgrove St on Fellmongers Rd in Breakwater.

$150,000 for pavement rehabilitation and asphalt overlay on a 275m stretch of Walkers Rd in Lara, between Mill Rd and Waverley Rd. Also including new recycled glass material trial.

$88,504 to introduce ‘community safety measures’ at hoon-hotspot Limeburners Point car park, including traffic management, improved street lighting and CCTV.

$15,000 to undertake 10 short-term priority actions from the Lara Traffic Management Plan, including truck route revisions, intersection amendments and speed zone changes.
