THE Geelong Football Club unintentionally hounded fans for money Friday afternoon when a glitch in the system saw them spam members with text messages about raffle tickets.

The Cats quickly took to social media to apologise for the automated SMS system failure and advise that they were working to rectify the situation.

It’s understood the AFL’s electronic communications team assisted Geelong to shut down the scheduled text messaging as soon as they were notified of the issue, which is why not all members were affected.

The message read: “Only two weeks left to get your ticket to Greatness! Raffle tickets selling fast! Get yours now for only $5”.

The text had an opt out number that was also broken.

But most took it in good humour, with a number of Cats fans Tweeting it was the most popular they had felt in a while and some even joking they felt left out that they didn’t receive it.

Supporters began an unofficial social media search for the member who received the message the most amount of times, with one woman claiming to rack up 22.

One user expressed admiration at the persistence, tweeting: “At least the media department understands the game plan of applying pressure. Sign up their supervisor as coach.”
